Forum Expanded Short Film Programme No.1 | Berlinale Meets… | February 2021
Forum Expanded section head Stefanie Schulte-Strathaus met with Kerstin Schroedinger, PolakVanBekkum, Cynthia Beatt and Emily Wardill, directors of “Songs of the Shirt”, “Lost On Arrival”, “Fury is a Feeling Too” and “Night for Day”. Screening in the 2021 Forum Expanded programme.
About the films:
“Songs of the Shirt”: As a choir that doesn’t gain visibility and as a film whose surface is pierced, the Songs appear as intervention, as disruption or interruption, like Luddites of film.
“Lost On Arrival”: After retiring, a man wants to return to the Caribbean island where he once lived. Advancing dementia ruins his plans. He moves there but never really arrives.
“Fury Is a Feeling Too”: A personal and cathartic examination of the filmmaker’s situation as a foreigner in Berlin. The aggressive tone of the film is reinforced by shots of destroyed buildings, post-war architecture, and the discordant character of Maurice Weddington’s music.
“Night for Day”: “Night for Day” uses a fake mother-son relationship to imagine a communist birthing a techno utopian, gender performativity through a lens of women living clandestinely during Portuguese dictatorship and the Last Woman as the fem bot from “The Tales of Hoffmann”.
