Films for All | In Focus | On Subtitling and Sign Language
What is necessary to provide access to audio-visual media for the deaf or hard of hearing? Inclusion is the duty of everyone in society and that includes filmmakers, producers, distributors, cinema operators, and those who mount film festivals. Accessible film versions and infrastructure can and should make films accessible to diverse audiences. With interpretation into German sign language (DGS), expanded subtitles (SDH), and induction loop and RF systems, the deaf and hard of hearing can also enjoy films.
This panel discussion examined the following issues: What are the requirements of a deaf or hard of hearing audience? What criteria should be applied in the selection and quality assurance of SDH (subtitles for the deaf and hard of hearing)? What steps need to be taken during production? What distribution channels are available?
